Marjorie H. Yuengling, 75, mother of brewery owner

Marjorie H. "Marge" Yuengling, 75, of 1322 Howard Ave., Pottsville, wife and mother of D.G. Yuengling & Son brewery owners, died Monday at her home.

Born in Pottsville, Dec. 20, 1921, she was a daughter of the late J. Park and Marjorie Koch Hood. Her maternal grandfather was Schuylkill County President Judge R.H. Koch.

She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Pottsville, the U.S. Golf Association, the Schuylkill Country Club, and the Pottsville Club.

An avid golfer, she frequently attended the Masters Golf Tournament and U.S. Open Golf Tournament, striking up a friendship with golf great Arnold Palmer -- whom she described as friendly and unassuming -- and his wife, Winnie.

One friend immediately recalled her "marvelous sense of humor," describing it as "sharp and insightful, but never cruel."

She was also avid about bridge -- one longtime partner described her as a reflective player who, if she lost, was a good loser. She was also an accomplished cook.

Surviving are her husband, retired brewery owner Richard L. Sr., Pottsville; a son, current brewery owner Richard L. Jr., Pottsville; a daughter, Patricia Y. San Giorgi, La Mesa, Calif.; a brother, John B. Hood, Wilmington, Del.; five grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; grandnieces and grandnephews.

Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Chapel of the Resurrection in Charles Baber Cemetery, Pottsville. The Rev. Charles H. Morris will officiate. Interment will be at the convenience of the family at Charles Baber Cemetery. Lord Funeral Home Inc., Pottsville, is in charge of arrangements.
